Paradise of Fruit and Flower: Ontario’s Armstrong Nursery and the 20th
Century Garden Ideal –
John Samuel Armstrong arrived in Ontario, California in 1889 with only twenty-
three dollars to his name. He eventually created an organization which not only tapped into California’s
bountiful landscape but also established himself as a world famous nurseryman. The Armstrong story
parallels and intersects with the transformation of Southern California’s natural landscape, the role of
federal plant patent legislation, and the development of
scientifically structured horticulture.
