Meeting Date: January 20, 2009
Section: Consent Calendar

SUBJECT: ADOPTION OF AN ORDINANCE RELATED TO SALARY COMPENSATION FOR THE CITY COUNCIL

RECOMMENDATION: That the City Council take final action to adopt the attached ordinance deferring the monthly salary compensation rate adjustments for the City Council.

COUNCIL GOALS: Operate in a Businesslike Manner

  • Live within our means, fully funding liabilities and reserves, while forming capital to strategically invest in the future.

FISCAL IMPACT: The recommended actions will result in estimated annual cost savings of approximately $11,000.

BACKGROUND: On January 6, 2009, the City Council held a public hearing to introduce an ordinance deferring the monthly salary compensation rate adjustments for the City Council.

In January 2008, the City Council approved a 10% adjustment to the base salary compensation (Government Code Section 36516) to become effective after the new Council was seated as a result of the November 2008 general election. To date, that adjustment has not been implemented. Now, due to the current economic climate and budget constraints, the City Council is considering the deferral of the City Council’s 10% salary adjustment. This action would retain the current base salary compensation rates, which are currently being paid. The previously approved 10% adjustments will be deferred to such time as the City’s economic condition improve to the point that the City Council is able to provide compensation increases to all employees.
