Teacher Cards

Public, private and home school teachers may apply for a Teacher Card.  Items taken out on a Teacher Card are intended for classroom use and are the responsibility of the borrowing teacher.

Card applications are available at the circulation desks.

A maximum of 35 books may be checked out for 28 days.
Overdue charges accrue at the normal rates. (15¢ per day per book - $1.00 per day per DVD/video)
Due to limited resources, we must restrict the number of books and videos taken on a single subject. Important! Pick up an authorization slip from a librarian before going to the checkout desk.
Renewals* may be allowed on an item-by-item basis depending on demand and resources and must take place at the branch where the original checkout occurred. No phone requests.

*Materials on hold may not be renewed.

Class Visits

We encourage teachers to bring their classes to the Library.  We can provide many services tailored to your needs.  To make your visit successful:

Schedule visits at least two weeks in advance. (Please notify us if you are unable to keep your appointment.)

Tell us what you would like the class visit to entail.
Arrive on time.
Due to limited resources, we must restrict the number of books and videos taken on a single subject. Important! Pick up an authorization slip from a librarian before going to the checkout desk.
Remind students to bring their library cards. Or, if they need cards, pick up the forms and return them at least one month in advance of the visit. Library cards will be mailed to student's home address prior to visit.

Assignment Tips

Whenever possible make sure your students have a written description of their assignment with your requirements clearly stated.  This will allow us to provide assistance in finding needed materials instead of second-guessing the assignment, which often happens when a student is unable to describe the assignment accurately.

Encourage students to do their own illustrations or use the internet.  Each year many library books have photographs and illustrations cut or torn out for reports.  Remind your class NOT to deface library materials.

Assignment Alerts (Children's Services only)

Help us assist your students by letting us know in advance about major assignments.  Use our Assignment Alert sheet.  We will make materials available to a greater number of students by setting a one-week loan period or by creating a reserve shelf (in-library use only) of materials related to your topic.  Copies of the Assignment Alert sheet are available at the Main and Branch Libraries at both the Children's and Adult Reference desks.

Give us at least one week's notice.

Visit the Library and become familiar with the materials available - this way you will not ask your students for three to five references and no encyclopedias when only one or two books are available on the topic
Encourage your students to use magazine and newspaper articles and pamphlets in addition to books. (Some items available only at the Main Library.)
Try not to give all students identical assignments or to assign the same topic as another teacher - although we have a sizable collection, we do not, for example, have 90 fourth grade level books on the Chumash Indians.
A Teacher Notification slip will be given to students when desired materials are not available or assignment instructions are not clear.
