Community Emergency Response Team

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is composed of community members trained to respond and assist the neighborhoods they live in after disaster strikes.

Each prospective CERT member undertakes a 20-hour long training that teaches them to accomplish tasks such as: fire safety, disaster medical operations, and search and rescue. After completion of training, new CERT members may start or join a CERT Neighborhood Group or apply to be an Ontario CERT volunteer.

Ontario CERT members are official City volunteers who undergo a background check and agree to volunteer 5-10 hours per month on maintaining and advancing the City CERT program. CERT classes are held twice a year.

The next CERT class is scheduled for May 17-19. Registration is now open at ontarioca.gov/registration.

The Fall CERT class is scheduled for November 1-3.

Emergency Communications Service

Ontario Emergency Communications Service (ECS) is a specialized detail within CERT tasked with providing auxiliary communications during special events and disasters.

This team consists of trained and licensed amateur radio operators and is considered part of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) for the City.

Licensed amateur radio operators may participate in Ontario ECS weekly nets on Thursday evenings at 6 pm on 147.480 Simplex and 447.200 Duplex (minus offset / PL 114.8).

For more information about Ontario ECS, please email [email protected].

CERT Readiness

All CERT members need to be ready and able to respond to disasters when necessary. Disasters aren't scheduled, so you need to be ready at all times.

ReadyOntario has you covered with great information on how to make a kit, create a plan, and stay informed about disasters.

Stay ready so you don't have to get ready!

If you would like to volunteer, please register at http://bit.ly/certaid by April 17.

Sound the Alarm - March 16, 2019

The Sound the Alarm Campaign drives impact through events in at-risk neighborhoods where volunteers go door-to-door to share fire education and prevention tools and install free smoke alarms.

The Ontario Fire Department and Ontario CERT partnered with the American Red Cross on a Sound the Alarm event on March 16, 2019. 90 volunteers installed 231 smoke alarms for 299 residents at the the Lamplighter Mobile Home Community.
